Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education program prepares you to teach young children in high-quality child care programs. It emphasizes concepts of growth and development, supporting children's dispositions in individualized and group learning experiences, loose parts, cultural sensitivity, self-awareness, team collaboration, constructive guidance, and respectful family partnerships.

This program will prepare you to provide creative, open-ended activities and environments to optimize children's learning potential in the context of secure and trusting relationships. The classes are structured based on adult learning theory and research: we teach in the way we want young children to be taught. This means we value your experience and knowledge, encourage critical thinking, and aim to build community within your cohort so that every student feels a sense of belonging.

This program offers interactive classes and innovative approaches to Early Childhood Education as well as hands-on opportunities to increase your knowledge and skills in working with young children.

Early Childhood Education, Associate of Applied Science

This two-year degree will prepare you to become a teacher of young children in early education programs (preschool and infant/toddler), family child care homes, or parent cooperatives.

Early Childhood Education, One-Year Certificate

This one-year certificate will assist you in becoming a teacher's assistant in a preschool or infant/toddler program, a family child care home owner or assistant, or an after-school program assistant.

Program Requirements

In this program, you are required to complete certain safety and documentation requirements before working directly with children.

Inoculation

You must have current inoculations before working directly with children.

Documentation

You need to submit documentation requirements by your second term.

Oregon Registry

While not required, our graduates are strongly encouraged to apply for the Oregon Registry.

Upon graduation, students in the Associate of Applied Science degree will be eligible to apply for Step 9 on the Oregon Registry.

Should you be pursuing QMHA?

LBCC's associate degrees significantly prepare students for career paths that lead to becoming a Qualified Mental Health Associate (QMHA.) We encourage students to consult with their instructors for guidance on how our programs align with the qualifications needed for QMHA certification.

The QMHA certification, offered by the is beneficial for individuals pursuing careers in various mental health and addiction-related fields. Holding a QMHA certification can enhance opportunities in occupations such as mental health technician, behavioral health specialist, case manager, community support specialist, or residential counselor. These roles often involve providing direct support and assistance to individuals dealing with mental health challenges or substance use disorders.
